Subcutaneous mastectomy with the use of an implant is a procedure of amputation of the breast with simultaneous reconstruction. The operation is performed both in oncological patients and in healthy women, as part of the prevention of breast cancer. The procedure of removing the mammary gland can be combined with the procedure of implanting a breast implant. The visual effect after the procedure should not differ from the natural appearance of the breast.

When is a preventive mastectomy performed*

Breast cancer is a serious oncological disease that has a strong correlation with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRC2 genes. It is estimated that in Poland about 100,000 Polish women carry the mutated gene. The risk of developing breast cancer in this case ranges from 56-80%. Due to such a high probability of the disease occurring, preventive removal of the breast - mastectomy - is recommended.

However, the removal of the breast is a painful blow to a woman, after all, breasts are a symbol of femininity. However, breast amputation does not have to mean a catastrophe. It is possible to perform a mastectomy with simultaneous breast reconstruction during one operation. At the Surgery Clinic, we perform a prophylactic mastectomy with breast reconstruction.

The course of a mastectomy procedure

Breast amputation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The operation aims to remove the entire mammary gland. Drains are left in the area where the removed breast was before the wound is sutured. The drains are removed a few days after the operation, when the discharge stops appearing. The removed mammary gland is sent for histopathological examination.

After breast amputation surgery

The patient stays in the Hospital  for one day, leaves the Hospital instructed and with recommendations, and in the following days appears for check-ups and dressings. After the procedure, pain may occur, but it is effectively combated with the help of generally available painkillers or medicines prescribed by the doctor.

Post-treatment recommendations

For several weeks after the procedure, the patient must wear a specially fitted compression garment both day and night. Return to physical activity can occur no sooner than after 6 weeks. It is not recommended to use a swimming pool, sauna or hot baths. It is recommended to sleep with your head raised and to place pillows under your shoulders.
